Guide to Writing College Essays in APA
APA is an acronym for American Psychological Association that dictates how you as college students should write and format your paper. While writing an essay on a scientific topic, you will most likely use the APA format.
How to format an APA Style Paper
While writing this paper use a white 8 ½ * 11 paper, make 1-inch margins on the top, bottom and sides. You should indent the first word in every paragraph by one-half inch. You should also double space the entire research paper. Times New Roman, size 12 is the standard font to use when writing your paper. You should also include a page header known as the “running head” at the top of the first page which is in capital letters with the title in small letters. Consequent pages will only have the title as their header. You insert the page numbers at the bottom of the page.
i. Paper Length
Based on the fact that you are most likely to use the APA format to write your essays in the science field, you should embrace the less is more approach. It enables you to put your points across in a direct, precise and brief manner. Exclude fluff and unimportant details from your essay as this will help keep the essay short and more concise.
ii. Proper use of headings
Headings play a key role in your essays as they organize your paper and make it simpler for you to locate different pieces of information. The heading will provide the reader with a rough idea of what you intend to talk about in the essay.
Your essay should not be dull to read, even after excluding fluff from your essay. You should try and put your reader into consideration and write it in an educative and interesting manner that will engage the reader.
iv. Parenthetical Citations
You should include brief in-text citation as a way of acknowledging other people’s work. In-text citations include the last name of the author and the yearly publication. You should include page numbers when citing a direct quote.
In the APA style of writing, the author(s) of the source comes first, followed by the date and title respectively. In case the source has more than one author, arrange the authors in the same order as found in the source. Use the first and middle name initials and the entire last name. You are to reference all in-text citations used throughout the document at the end. You are then to list the references alphabetically with a hanging indentation of one-half inch.
